What to Rebuild, Refurbish or Restore with Hairpin Legs
There's a particular kind of satisfaction in walking past a skip, a car boot sale or your own garage and spotting a slab of solid wood that everyone else has written off. A tabletop with water rings. An old scaffold board nobody wants. A door that's been taken off its hinges for the last time. On their own, these are just offcuts. Add a set of hairpin legs and they become furniture again.
Hairpin legs have become the go-to fix for exactly this kind of project. They're quick to fit, they read as “industrial” or “mid-century modern” depending on the finish you pick, and unlike a full rebuild from scratch, they let the character of the original material do the talking. Here are four projects that get the most out of a set of hairpin legs, worked through properly: what to look for, which spec to buy, and how to actually fit them.
1. The Coffee Table Restoration
This is the project hairpin legs are best known for, and it's the easiest place to start if you've never used them before.
What to look for: an old door, a cut-down section of dining table, a thick scaffold board, or a reclaimed workbench top: anything flat, roughly 90–140 cm long and at least 25 mm thick. Water stains, old paint and even a few gouges are fine; a light sand and a coat of oil or wax will bring most reclaimed wood back to life, and the imperfections are usually what makes the finished piece look intentional rather than flat-packed.
Choosing your legs: coffee table height typically sits at around 30–41 cm, so that's the range to work within. Go for 3-prong legs if your tabletop is thick, 25 mm+, or heavy, since the extra prong spreads the load and helps prevent rocking on an uneven floor. 2-prong legs are perfectly sturdy for anything lighter.

Fitting it:
- Sand and finish the tabletop first, since it's much harder to do neatly once the legs are on.
- Measure in 5–8 cm from each corner and mark your four mounting points, checking the diagonals match so the table doesn't sit skewed.
- Pre-drill pilot holes at each screw point. This matters more than people expect on reclaimed wood, which splits far more easily than new timber.

- Flip it over and check for wobble on a flat floor before calling it done. If one corner rocks, it's almost always worth checking first that every screw and mounting plate is sitting flush.

If you've been meaning to sort a home-office corner, this is one of the fastest routes from a pile of reclaimed timber to a usable desk, and it's one of the most common uses for hairpin legs for a reason.
What to look for: an old panel door, reclaimed floorboards edge-glued into a panel, or a thick stair tread. Standard desk depth is around 60–75 cm, so a single door laid flat, sanded and sealed can do the job with almost no cutting.
Choosing your legs: standard desk height is roughly 73–75 cm, and legs of around 71 cm, combined with the thickness of the desktop, get you close to that without any cutting or improvising. Go for 12 mm thickness rather than 10 mm for a desk. The heavier-gauge steel gives you more margin for the daily weight of a monitor, books and an elbow leaning on the corner. Two-prong is fine for a lightweight door top; step up to 3-prong if your desktop is a dense reclaimed panel.
Fitting it: the process mirrors the coffee table above, but pay closer attention to the corner overhang. Desks get leaned on at the front edge far more than coffee tables do, so keep your leg mounting points slightly further in, around 8–10 cm, at the front two corners for extra stability under load. Always pre-drill on reclaimed doors, which are often thinner and more prone to splitting near the edges than solid boards.
3. The Bench
An underrated project: a bench is faster to build than either of the above, needs less material, and is genuinely useful in an entryway, at the end of a bed, or pulled up to a dining table for extra seating.
What to look for: a single scaffold board, a stair tread, a short offcut of thick reclaimed timber, or even an old shelf board. Benches don't need much surface area, which makes them a good project for using up a piece too small for a tabletop.
Choosing your legs: this is the one project where height genuinely depends on use. A low bench for the end of a bed or as a plant-pot shelf works well with legs around 30 cm high. A proper entryway or dining bench sits better with legs around 41 cm, closer to standard seat height. Anything taller starts to feel like a low table rather than a bench. Because benches take direct weight from people sitting on them, 3-prong legs in 12 mm are the safer default even on a relatively light board.
Fitting it: follow the same measure-and-pre-drill process, but fit all four legs before testing weight, and test on a flat, hard floor rather than carpet. A bench that seems solid on carpet can still rock slightly on tile or wood if a leg isn't perfectly flush. If you're using a scaffold board, check both ends for old nail holes or bolt holes before marking your mounting points, since these are common on reclaimed boards and can weaken a screw's grip if you mount directly over one.
4. The Full Dining Table Rebuild
The most ambitious of the four, and the one where getting the spec right actually matters for safety, not just looks.
What to look for: several scaffold boards edge-joined into a single tabletop, a reclaimed workbench surface, or a thick salvaged door. Dining tables need a genuinely solid, flat surface since they take sustained weight across the whole top, not just at the edges. If you're joining several boards yourself, batten the underside first with a couple of cross-battens screwed underneath, both to keep the boards flat and to give the leg mounting plates something substantial to bite into.

Choosing your legs: this is where spec choice stops being optional. Go for the 71 cm height, 12 mm thickness, 3-prong combination, rated to 350 kg per set and the heaviest-duty option in the range. A dining table needs to handle sustained weight from plates, dishes and people leaning on the edge for years, not just the occasional plant pot. Black or Raw Steel both suit a heavier, more industrial tabletop; Antique Copper can look fantastic but is a stronger visual statement across a bigger surface area.
Fitting it: with a bigger, heavier top, mounting is less forgiving of error, so measure twice. Mark all four positions before drilling any of them and double-check the diagonals are equal. If your top is joined from multiple boards, position at least one mounting screw on each side of a joint line where possible, which helps stop that joint flexing independently of the rest of the table over time.
